Besides being uncomfortable and possibly even painful, skin disorders can have a significant impact on the physical appearance of those who suffer from them. If you live with skin conditions on a regular basis, you are may already be quite familiar with feelings of self consciousness during social or work situations.

Studies linking depression to skin disorders have shown that a significant parallel exists between skin health and emotional and physical well being. Many skin disorders that have an inherent physiological basis, such as such as eczema and psoriasis, can nonetheless be exacerbated by undue stress as well as poor dietary choices. Following are three ways that skin disorders can have a negative impact on your emotional state.

Physical Pain

Most serious skin disorder involve substantial amounts of physical pain, and this can wear even the most stalwart person down over a matter of time. Pain can also make everyday activities difficult, and this can have a substantial effect on mood. It’s tough to be on top of your game emotionally and mentally when your body is experiencing constant pain.

Embarrassment & Social Anxiety

Feelings of embarrassment and social anxiety may be one of the most significant factors in depression among those who suffer from severe skin conditions. Normal interactions with other human beings in social or work settings can be emotionally and mentally draining among those who suffer from feelings of extreme self consciousness due to noticeable skin disorders. Some people even find it challenging to handle routine employment obligations and to have a normal social life.

Financial Distress

Medical treatment for skin disorders can be expensive, and financial troubles are one of the leading causes of stress and depression. Some treatments simply don’t work equally well on all people, people are very likely to become further stressed if costly treatments don’t work.

Other ways of coping with serious skin conditions exist, such as consuming a diet high in foods that possess anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants as well as exploring gluten-free dietary options. Massage, medication, therapy, and relaxation techniques can also be effective in keeping stress and depression at bay among those who suffer from severe skin disorders.
