Eczema: What Hurts and What Helps

By Cheryl Lee

Approximately 3% of adults and 10-20% of children suffer from eczema in the United States alone. There are millions of products out there that promise solutions and relief from this skin condition but how do you know what works and what doesn’t?

What Hurts and Aggravates Eczema

Fragrance Mix 1: is more commonly known in many beauty products as ‘fragrance’. You can easily find it in products such as hand soaps, household cleaners, cosmetics and many more common items in your home. The fragrance is made up of chemicals such as cinnamic alcohol and aldehyde, hydroxycitronellal, eugenol, and isoeugenol. These are terrible for anyone with eczema. It dries out the skin and can cause rashes or chemical type burns on sensitive skin. Always read the labels on the products you bring into your home and choose products with natural cleaning solutions like vinegar and lemon.

Disperse Dye: Have you ever worn a sweater or pants that when you took them off, left some of the dye on your skin? Almost all clothes are made with some type of textile dye but the one that leaves residue is called ‘disperse dye’.  It comes in powder form and can be ‘dispersed’ on the fabric. Unfortunately, this also can cause flare ups for people who have eczema. The dye is an irritant and can cause rashes.

Added Chemicals: You would be surprised at the quantity of chemicals in your favorite beauty and body care products.  Compounds like tixocortal-21 pivalate, formaldehyde, cocamindopropyl betaine and myroxylon pereriea can be found in products such as cosmetics, perfumes, soaps, shampoos and even baby products! All of these can cause eczema to flare up, especially in children.

Food:  Some surprising triggers for eczema could be in what you eat. Peanuts, soy, dairy, wheat and eggs can all cause major issues, especially for kids. It acts like a food allergy for them and can be tricky to figure out what causes it in your child without an allergy test. Before cutting out items from their well balanced diet, schedule a visit with the pediatrician to determine the best course of action.

There is relief from eczema and not just in drinking lots of water and avoiding every one of your favorite foods.
